China's steel exports to Southeast Asia have increased rapidly---Part 2
Jun. 11, 2018
Not only face the competition of local steel companies, China's steel products are also being squeezed by other competitors in the Southeast Asian market. On the one hand, in the high-end and high-end product areas, Japan and South Korea have obvious advantages in products, and both countries value the development potential of the Southeast Asian market. It is difficult for Chinese steel products to shake up the position of Japanese and Korean products in the Southeast Asian market in a short period of time.
On the other hand, high quality and low price are major advantages for Chinese steel products to gallop in the steel market in Southeast Asia. However, in recent years, CIS countries have shown cost advantages due to low raw material costs, vertical integration of steel companies and devaluation of currencies, even if they are transported. Far distance, high freight, and its price is still more attractive to the Southeast Asian steel market. In 2017, the Commonwealth of Independent States exported about 5 million tons of steel to ASEAN, which was only a drop of 200,000 tons compared with 2016. The decline rate was far lower than that in China. It can be seen that it has formed a competitive advantage in the Southeast Asian market and it has occupied a stable market.
In addition, Southeast Asia has also invested in the construction of a large number of wire and plate production lines in recent years, which has caused a sharp increase in pressure on China's steel exports to Southeast Asia.
