U.S. raises tariffs, Turkish steel exports are blessed in disguise
Sep. 18, 2018
According to foreign media reports, after the United States doubled the tariff on Turkish steel products, Turkish steel products were basically rejected by the US market. Therefore, Turkish steel products have to be turned to other countries for export. However, from the data point of view, Turkish steel exports are blessed in disguise.
The largest exporter of Turkish steel last year was the United States, with Israel and Italy ranking second and third. However, due to the high steel tariffs imposed by the United States, from January to May this year, Turkish steel exports to the United States were less than 500,000 tons, less than half of last year. On the contrary, Turkey’s steel exports to Italy and Spain have increased.
Seth Rosenfeld, an analyst at Jeffries International, pointed out that due to strong demand in the world steel market, Turkish steel products that were rejected by the US could be digested by other markets.
Since the beginning of this year, the export of Turkish steel products has grown significantly. Turkey, which ranks sixth in the world in terms of steel production, exported 8.4 billion U.S. dollars from January to July this year, an increase of 27% over the same period last year. It is expected that the annual export volume will greatly exceed last year’s $11.5 billion.
