New U.S. Steel and Aluminum Import Tariff Measures Enter into Force, Brazilian Government: Unfair
Jun. 04, 2018
According to foreign media reports, the United States has taken effect on Brazil’s quotas and tariffs for steel and aluminum exports to the United States. The Brazilian government says it is “unfair” and is willing to negotiate and find solutions that are beneficial to both industries.
According to the new quota system accepted by Brazil's steel industry, Brazil's steel products exported to the United States will be reduced by about one-fifth. This is a blow to Brazil's steel-making industry, which has already been hit hard by both the idleness of production capacity and global oversupply.
The Brazilian aluminum manufacturing industry did not accept quotas because of the selection of tariffs. Therefore, aluminum exported to the United States will be subject to a 10% tariff.
Brazil declared that the implementation of quotas and tariffs will also harm the US industry that imports Brazil’s steel and aluminum, and importers will face higher costs.
The Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a statement: “The Brazilian government believes that the restrictions imposed on Brazilian exports are unfair and will continue to adopt an open attitude to find solutions to meet the expectations and demands of Brazil and the United States steel and aluminum industries.”
