Russia and EU are prepare appropriate countermeasures on "steel-aluminum tariff"

Jun. 06, 2018

The official website of the Russian Legal Information issued on the 4th this day Putin signed the legal document. According to this law, the Russian government can introduce various countermeasures. The new law takes effect on the date of signing.

Forms of countermeasures include the termination or suspension of international cooperation with unfriendly countries or institutions, prohibiting or restricting the import and export of products and raw materials with unfriendly countries or institutions, and prohibiting or restricting the participation of institutions under the jurisdiction or control of these countries in the Russian government. Procurement projects and state-owned assets privatization projects.

The U.S. side has previously imposed sanctions on a number of individuals and entities in Russia, leading to continued deterioration of relations between the two countries. Trump expressed his willingness to improve relations with Russia several times before and after he took office, but due to the so-called "Russian launches cyber attacks to intervene in the US general election", the Ukrainian conflict, and the situation in Syria, relations between the two countries fell into the lowest point since the Cold War. The U.S. Department of the Treasury has already imposed additional rounds of sanctions on Russia this year, and expelled as many as 60 Russian diplomats as a result of former Russian agents in the "poisoning" incident in the United Kingdom.

The U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations Nicky Blackley said last month that the U.S. Department of the Treasury will impose new sanctions on Russia to punish Russia for "supporting" the Syrian government in launching a so-called "chemical weapons attack." However, the United States has not yet announced new sanctions. Informed officials disclosed that US President Trump wants to “slow down” this issue. White House spokesman Sarah Saunders said last month that the United States is still considering additional sanctions against Russia and the relevant decisions will be made in the near future.
