Jun. 06, 2018
The warming momentum in Russia-Europe relations has recently emerged. Analysts believe that on the issue of Iran's nuclear agreement and trade, the EU and the United States have serious differences recently, and the positions between Russia and Europe are relatively close. The anti-Russian sanctions that have lasted for many years have caused both Russia and Europe to lose. Starting from their respective interests, both Russia and Europe now have the desire to strengthen dialogue. In the future, the two sides may further communicate and cooperate in the areas of economy, trade, energy, and security, as well as hot issues in Iran, Syria, and Ukraine.
On May 24, Putin met with French President Mark Long who paid an official visit to Russia. After the talks, the economic departments of Russia and France signed a joint statement on the future economic partnership between the two parties. Macron said that France recognizes Russia's powerful leadership role on some international issues and that France and Russia can cooperate on such major international issues as Ukraine, Iran and Syria.
Russia and France reached a number of economic and trade agreements during Macron’s visit, including six contracts of France’s direct investment in Russia totaling US$1.17 billion. In addition, the French energy giant Total increased its investment in Russia’s Arctic LNG project and purchased a 10% stake in Russia’s Novatec for US$2.55 billion.
This is after another German Chancellor Angela Merkel visited Europe after another European leader. Putin also met with visiting German Chancellor Angela Merkel on May 18th. The leaders of the two countries reiterated their support for the maintenance of the Iran nuclear agreement. Merkel said that the good relations with Russia are in line with Germany’s strategic interests. The two sides confirmed that they will continue to promote the construction of the second-line project of the "North Stream" natural gas pipeline from Russia to Germany, regardless of the opposition of the United States.
