National Day Special

Oct. 22, 2018

I believe You were enjoying the long National day holiday. This holiday is to celebrate the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, although the actual national day is technically only one day, but over the years, the holiday gradually extended into a “Golden Week” as we call it. And for most part of China, this is perhaps one of the most comfortable experience over the year, with lots of people from all parts of the country reporting good weather, comfortable temperature, and sunshine. So whether you are laying around at home with snacks and TV, spending some quality time with your families and friends, or you decided to hit the road or to see more of the country of the world, this is much needed and treasured holiday for most Chinese. So today let’s talk about “National Day”. We are going to take a look at signature elements. Things you see, things you experience, and things you talk about, and later on the episode, I am also going to take you to some English speaking countries to take a look at their National Day.

National Day Special

Talking about signature elements about the national day celebration, we have to start with the day before the actual national day, this is when the top leaders of the country pay tribute to national heroes at the Monument to the People’s Heroes. In the early morning, you will see over hundred thousand people, from all over the country gathering at Tian’an Men Square, to see flag raising ceremony. And you will hear National anthem played by military band, and all over the country you will see a lot of festive decorations, and when it’s a big year, for example, the 60s anniversary, there would be a military parade. Some parts of the country will also have live concerts, Firework shows and light shows. Generally, during the national day’s celebrations, you experience Patriotism, and this is also when a lot of Chinese would feel Patriotic. So this is about our national day. So have you ever wondered what is national day like in other countries?

Unlike other public holidays, which are normally associated with cultural heritage, or religious celebrations for example like Chinese New Year, or Christmas. National day is often related to key political and historical moments. Therefore national holidays around the world are often called Independence Day(the US), Unity Day(Russia), Revolution Day(Egypt) , Liberation day or Constitution Day. Or in the case’s of some countries, it is just named as country’s name, for example, Canada Day, Australia day.

So let’s take a look at some English speaking countries and their national day.

First of all let’s take a look at the United States. This is the another country that’s very big on its national day celebrations. And for them is of course the 4th. Of July. Or they call it “independence day”, if you remember your history lessons, this is to celebrate the adoption Decoration of Independence on 4th. July 1776. The Continental Congress declared that the thirteen American colonies regarded themselves as free and independent states, the United States of America, and were no longer connected to the British Crown. Independence Day is the National Day of the United States.

For average Americans independence day is usually associated with lots of fireworks, most of the major counties across the country would have firework this place, like famous Mecy’s firework shows in New York city, a part from fireworks is also related to parades, barbecues, carnival, so lots of activities such as food, picnic, concerts, family gatherings. And same as the national day in China it’s also a patriotic holiday. So the decorations are usually colored red blue and white, the colors of the American flag. Many politicians would make a point and state may appear a public event to say nice things about the national’s heritage laws, society, history and people.

Canada Day

Compared as the enthusiasm about national day in the United States, the neighbouring Canada celebrates their national holiday in a more relaxed manner, so Canada day is celebrated across the country but there is no standard mode of celebration.

Most communities across the country will host organized celebrations for Canada Day, typically outdoor public events, such as parades, carnivals, barbecues, air and maritime shows, fireworks, and free musical concerts, as well as citizenship ceremonies.

Australia Day

Australia Day is the official national day of Australia. Celebrated annually on 26 January, it marks the anniversary of the 1788 arrival of the First Fleet of British ships at Port Jackson, New South Wales and the raising of the Flag of Great Britain at Sydney Cove.

In present-day Australia, celebrations reflect the diverse society and landscape of the nation and are marked by community and family events, reflections on Australian history, official community awards and citizenship ceremonies welcoming new members of the Australian community.

However, since at least 1938,the date of Australia Day has also been marked by Indigenous Australians, and those sympathetic to their cause, mourning what they see as the invasion of their land by Europeans and protesting its celebration as a national holiday. These groups sometimes refer to 26 January as "Invasion Day" or "Survival Day" and advocate that the date should be changed.

In the UK

Britain has no unique national day. Nowadays there are so many different voices for choosing a national holiday for the United Kingdom, The Queen's Official Birthday (a Saturday chosen in June) , Trafalgar Day (21 October) ·,Remembrance Sunday , Recently year that people they were saying that use United Kingdom's withdrawal from the European Union (23 June) the date of the referendum.

It has a number of days of celebration which go largely uncelebrated. There are special dates related to patron saints : St George's Day in England, St Andrew's Day in Scotland, St David's Day in Wales and St Patrick's Day in Northern Ireland.

But at this state united Kingdom doesn’t have the unique national day that everyone recognizes.

Malaysia National Day

On 31th. Aug. 1957 Malaysia was officially separated and independent under British rule.

A few days before the National Day, the festival atmosphere filled the country's major and small cities, especially the capital city of Kuala Lumpur, more lively, decorated with lanterns and festoons, in the major buildings and main streets, colorful flags, ribbons and coconut spikes...festive atmosphere is everywhere. On the National Day, every major avenue in the city was crowded with celebrations, especially in the Merdeka Plaza which has declared Malaysia becomes a independent country. Students from all different schools gathered here to watch the big celebrations in the plaza.

So that is the tour around English speaking countries and their national day.
